I remember that when I was a kid, we served my Mom breakfast in bed on Mothers Day. My sister's birthday is May 13, and some years that coincided with Mothers Day, so she also got breakfast in bed.
Side note: I find breakfast in bed to be awkward and often messy.
Also when I was a kid, we belonged to a church whose minister had lost his mother at an early age, and consequently his Mothers Day sermons were on the grim side. I remember one year when he talked about famous burial places of mothers, like the Taj Mahal. My mother finally insisted that we go elsewhere on Mothers Day.
When our kids were young, they often made cards or gifts in school for Mothers Day. I still have some of those. We would usually NOT go out to eat because everyone in the Chicago area was trying to eat out. Even picking up lox and bagels was problematic because a lot of people had the same idea. I think my husband decided that picking up food on Saturday was the way to go.
I don't know what we are doing this year. Our daughter is in Houston and our son is nearby, but has a wife, son and in-laws all nearby. Probably a quiet, enjoyable day; maybe a walk or a trip to the Botanic Gardens.
How do you observe Mothers Day?
